Joseph Paul Torre was born on July 18, 1940, in Brooklyn, New York. He was the youngest of five children and grew up in a tough neighborhood in Brooklyn. Torre’s father was a New York City police detective killed in the line of duty when Torre was just nine years old.
Torre’s mother, a seamstress, raised the family independently after her husband’s death.
Torre attended St. Francis Preparatory School in Brooklyn and played baseball and basketball there. He was offered a scholarship to play college basketball at the University of Notre Dame but decided to pursue a career in baseball instead.
In 1960, Torre signed a professional contract with the Milwaukee Braves. He made his major league debut in 1961 and played for the Braves until 1964 when he was traded to the St. Louis Cardinals.
Torre played for the Cardinals until 1969 when he was traded to the New York Mets. He retired as a player in 1977 and began his managerial career the following year.
