JaMarcus Russell was born on August 9, 1985, in Mobile, Alabama. He attended Williamson High School in Mobile, where he played high school football for the Lions. He was considered one of the top quarterback prospects in the country and was heavily recruited by a number of Division I college football programs.
He decided to attend Louisiana State University (LSU), where he played college football for the LSU Tigers. He was redshirted his first year but went on to start for three seasons, leading the team to a Sugar Bowl victory in 2006. He was a first-team All-SEC selection in 2006 and was considered one of the best quarterbacks in the country heading into the 2007 NFL Draft.
Russell had a good college career but his professional career didn’t live up to his draft status, there were high expectations for him when the Raiders drafted him first overall in the 2007 NFL Draft, but he struggled to adapt to the NFL game and never lived up to his potential. Russell’s rookie season was somewhat of a disappointment as he played in only seven games, starting three of them, and completing 52.1% of his passes with two touchdowns and four interceptions.
